Why teams look for an Intercom alternative
Intercom covers website chat, email, a help center, product tours, outbound messages and an AI agent, across web and mobile. For a funded company with a support team that's a strong package. For a two-person app team it often isn't.
These are the reasons I hear most:
- The bill grows with seats and AI resolutions, so it's hard to predict
- Most of the product is built around the website, not the app
- Setup and configuration take real time
- Subscription data from RevenueCat, Superwall or Adapty needs custom work
- You only need a fraction of the features
What to check before you switch
Write down what you actually use in Intercom today. For most app teams it's three things: a chat in the app, push notifications when you reply, and answers to the same ten questions. Then check each alternative for a native SDK for your stack, a pricing model you can plan around, and how much work it is to move over.
The 7 best Intercom alternatives
Full disclosure: the first one is mine. The rest are in no particular order.
1. Chatslane
Chatslane is a support chat built only for mobile apps. One setup prompt in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex adds a native chat to your Swift, Kotlin, React Native/Expo or Flutter app. Replies arrive as push notifications, with an email fallback for users who are away.
Every chat shows the user's plan and purchases from RevenueCat, Superwall or Adapty. From the same chat you can send a retention offer, ask for an App Store review, or start a broadcast to a group of users. Common questions get instant answers from your FAQ, and everything else goes to your team.
- Best for: indie developers and small app teams
- Watch out for: no website chat or email ticketing, by design
2. Crisp
Crisp is a shared inbox with website chat, a knowledge base and mobile SDKs. It has a free plan, which makes it a common first stop for small SaaS teams.
- Best for: teams supporting a website and an app from one inbox
- Watch out for: website-first; the free plan limits seats and features
3. Help Scout
Help Scout is a calm, email-first help desk with a docs product and Beacon, a widget you can also add to iOS and Android apps.
- Best for: teams where most support still comes in by email
- Watch out for: the app chat is an add-on to an email tool
4. Freshchat
Freshchat is the messaging product from Freshworks, with mobile SDKs, bots and a tie-in to Freshdesk for tickets. There's a free tier to start.
- Best for: teams that want chat now and tickets later
- Watch out for: two products if you need both
5. Zendesk
Zendesk is the classic help desk, with a mobile SDK that brings tickets and messaging into your app. It's more of a peer to Intercom than a lighter option.
- Best for: larger support teams across email, phone and web
- Watch out for: setup effort and per-agent pricing
6. Tidio
Tidio combines live chat with an AI chatbot and has a free plan. It's aimed at online stores and small businesses.
- Best for: website chat for ecommerce
- Watch out for: mobile apps aren't its focus
7. Helpshift
Helpshift has done in-app support for apps and games for years, with bots, an in-app FAQ and routing for big teams.
- Best for: game studios and large publishers
- Watch out for: sales-led; heavy for a solo developer
Free Intercom alternatives
If budget is the main reason you're leaving, Crisp, Freshchat and Tidio all have free plans. Expect limits on seats, history or automation, and check whether the mobile SDK is part of the free plan before you build on it.
Chatslane doesn't have a free plan. It has one flat monthly price for your whole team, so adding a teammate never changes the bill, and you can cancel any time.
How to move off Intercom
Switching is less work than it sounds:
- Add the new chat SDK next to Intercom in one release
- Point your "Contact us" button at the new chat
- Copy your top FAQ answers over first; they cover most questions
- Keep Intercom open until old conversations are closed, then remove the SDK
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Intercom alternative for mobile apps?
For small app teams, a support chat built for apps, like Chatslane, fits better than a multi-channel platform. For larger teams that also need website and email support, Zendesk or Freshworks are the closest swaps.
Is there a free Intercom alternative?
Yes. Crisp, Freshchat and Tidio have free plans with limits. Check that the mobile SDK is included before you rely on it.
Why is Intercom so expensive for small teams?
Pricing grows with seats and AI usage, and many plans bundle features small teams don't use. Check Intercom's pricing page for current numbers.
Can I keep my conversation history when I switch?
Most tools let you export conversations. Many teams simply keep the old tool open for a few weeks until open conversations are closed.
